Kevin Watson

Oarsome Sport & Fitness is a sport science consultancy run by Kevin Watson. A former Great Britain (GB) and Scottish International Rower, his main personal sporting achievement was winning a silver medal in the Quadruple Sculls Championship in Canada. Although still a junior at 18 years old, Kevin was selected for the senior Scotland squad. Kevin has won two gold medals at the National Championships of Great Britain, one at junior 16 and one at junior 18, and was the first Scottish junior 16 to be selected for the single sculler for the Franco British International. Kevin's gold medal in the prestigious championship sculls event at the National Schools Championship of Great Britain was also a first for a Scot.

As an U23 sculler his most noticeable achievement was included a silver medal at the Amsterdam International Regatta and a silver in the National Championship of Great Britain As a senior, Kevin took the bronze medal in the heavyweight single sculls event at the 2003 National Championship of Great Britain. Kevin has also won several gold medals at the Scottish Rowing Championships and was an academy athlete in the National Rowing Academy.

Kevin has now recently been appointed as a Henley Stewards Charitable Trust (HSCT) scholarship coach with the ARA.

Profile of Sport Scientist & Fitness Consultant

As a Sport Scientist based at the University of Strathclyde, Kevin provided sport science support to athletes within the West of Scotland Institute of Sport, the Scottish Institute of Sport, Glasgow School of Sport and Glasgow City Council. The sports that were supported across the various partners included:

The type of support provided depended on the needs of the sport. Support was in the form of blood lactate assessment, assessment of maximal oxygen uptake and field based fitness assessment, including anthropometry. Support also included providing educational support to athletes in the form of presentations as well as extensive coach education on sport science related topics.

As a High Performance Strength & Conditioning Coach at the Glasgow School of Sport, Kevin is responsible for the aerobic conditioning of the five key sports of swimming, hockey, gymnastics, athletics and badminton. He also assists in the coaching of the strength, weights-based programmes for the supported sports. His role also involves running the Sport Education module of the school curriculum. This role encompasses both the development of the syllabus as well as the practical teaching of the module. The job involves both the planning of training programmes and hands on coaching with 11-18 year olds.
