Oarsome Sport & Fitness sport scientists have worked with the West of Scotland Institute of Sport hockey programme. Hockey support provided took the format of hockey fitness testing and providing guidelines for improving the aerobic fitness of the hockey players.

Oarsome Sport & Fitness hold the contract for 2004-05 with the Glasgow School of Sport to run the hockey sport science support services for the hockey programme. The hockey sport science programme provided will involve testing 17 elite youth players at key points within the hockey season. Precise feedback will be provided to the High Performance Hockey Coach on the various aspects of hockey specific fitness testing and guidelines provided on the areas of development for each hockey player.

Sport Science Support also includes a training study that examines the physiological response of key training sessions. This response will then be compared to what is required for the particular time in the session. Physiological measures will involve collecting heart rate and blood lactate data. Guidelines in training sessions at key points in the session will be provided.

Hockey coach education seminars have also been run for the Scottish Hockey Union. Topics have included the uses of sport science support in hockey and overtraining.

As an intermittent sport hockey requires both speed and endurance. Hockey training for such a sport often focuses on developing one area of fitness to the neglect of another. Oarsome Sport & Fitness can assist in writing training programmes that will enhance all the necessary aspects of fitness of hockey players. Position specific fitness is very important to success in hockey. Oarsome Sport & Fitness will not only provide a generic hockey training template for the year but will provide detailed day-by-day training programmes for individual hockey players that meet the needs of the position they play.

Sport science support for hockey can take several forms:

Specific training programmes that meet the needs of a squad or individual can be tailored. Please contact us to discuss specific details.
