What is strength & conditioning?

Strength & conditioning is a discipline that involves the physical preparation of athletes for sport. Strength training is used to compliment sport specific training by building muscle, increasing strength or developing power. Strength training is periodised to meet the goals of the athlete. The aim in the general preparation phase of the season is to increase muscle mass and general strength. As the athlete moves into the competition phase of the season strength work will focus more and more on the development of power, an attribute required in the majority of sports to some degree.

Conditioning specifically deals with the fitness element of an athletes training. In the general preparation phase of the season, conditioning will generally focus on the development of endurance. As the season progresses conditioning will focus more and more on the development of speed in preparation for competition. Conditioning exercises can often be used to transfer the strength gains developed in the gym into sport specific fitness required for competition. In team sports such conditioning work often takes the form of SAQ (speed, agility & quickness) training.

The type of strength and conditioning exercises and split between the types of training will be dictated by the physiological demands of the sports. Each individual athlete will be individually assessed and a suitable programme will be devised to meet their personal goals, enhance their strengths and develop their weaknesses.
